Why I identify with Glee

Postby mpankratz » Thu Nov 12, 2009 11:25 pm

It has taken me a few episodes to gather my thoughts for this post. But, once I saw the pilot episode, I began to consider why I liked this show so much. Why, as a 35 year old married man with two young boys, have I been so affected by a television show?

There are two main reasons I can derive from following the show.

The first is what I expect to be the most universal. The show is extremely well written, performed, produced, and guided. The show creators and producers have proved their considerable talent in assembling a cast that represents a modern and diverse public educational institution. And, the talent of all of that cast is forefront in amazing displays every week. Singing, dancing, acting are the tools that seamlessly integrate into compelling storylines while propelling them beyond standard expectations for scripted shows.

The second is my personal past experiences and love for singing, music, and musical performances. My childhood was spent singing, practicing, and listening to music more than any other activity outside of farm chores. When my childhood friends would talk about going to pop, rock, or country music concerts, I could only respond with my experiences at the symphony, the ballet, and musical theater.

And, I was the only 6 foot 7 inch male in my high school who was rehearsing for the next play or musical instead of playing basketball or football. But i really loved being on stage. And I remember the questions and challenges that Glee has shown as part of participating in the club. I went through those too. I also went through the fleeting romances, jealousies, insecurities, and triumphs.

These are all there in the show, and I think that is a wonderful thing. Thank you to the actors, directors, producers, and production staff for this show.

And, Keep Holding On

Sincerely,

A Gleek
